Meet the STUDER S131 Radius

The cylindrical die powerhouse delivers speedy, precise production.

Engineered for exceptional accuracy, the STUDER S131 Radius internal cylindrical grinding machine excels at the internal grinding of intricate radii, spheres, balls, tapers and diameters. These highly capable machines are widely favored by manufacturers of carbide and ceramic dies, as well as high-precision hydraulic components. Additionally, they can produce precision components crafted from advanced materials like sapphire, industrial ceramics and carbide.

S131 Radius at a glance

  • Swing diameter: 300 mm (11.8”)
  • Maximum workpiece weight: 100 kg (220 lbs)
  • Swivelling range, workpiece table: -60° to +91°
  • Wheelhead configuration: up to 4 grinding spindles

Flexibility and speed by design

The S131 Radius is built for external, internal and face grinding in one machine. The wheelhead can be configured to hold a maximum of four grinding spindles, up to two of which can be used for external (OD) grinding.

The swivel axis has a swivel range of -50° to +280° and can rotate 180° in less than three seconds. The direct drive is capable of incredibly precise positioning, and the high resolution direct measuring system guarantees a positioning accuracy of < 1 arc seconds.

What do all of these features add up to? Parts are finish ground to completion in the same clamping, all while reducing processing times, maximizing precision, and in some cases eliminating extra steps required for fine surface finishes.

Stability for grinding precision

Precision internal grinding starts with the right machine base. For the S131 Radius, the one-piece Granitan® machine base delivers six to eight times better damping and thermal stability over cast iron. The advanced StuderGuide® guide system for the longitudinal and cross slides is molded directly into the machine base and finished with a wear-resistant Granitan® surfacing material.

The guideways offer the highest possible accuracy through the entire speed range with high load capacity and damping levels. These features help the S131 Radius to deliver superior accuracy and achieve surface finishes below 2 Ra microinches, eliminating the need for post-process polishing on finished parts.

Operator-friendly controls and software

The performance of the S131 Radius is easy to access and master thanks to the C.O.R.E. operating system and StuderSIM software. The C.O.R.E. panel features a modern and intuitive multi-touch display that makes it easy for new and experienced operators alike to navigate the machine menu and breeze through process steps quickly and easily.

Engineered specifically for internal cylindrical operations, the StuderSIM software streamlines the setup and execution of key grinding, dressing, and measurement routines. Operators can easily define core cycles including bore, face, taper, and thread machining via intuitive parameter entry fields. This practical, shop-floor-driven setup delivers versatile capabilities while keeping workflow simple and efficient.

The silver bullet for ammo die production

Manufacturing carbide dies for the ammunition industry requires extreme precision through a variety of complex processes. The radii, blend of the radii, and the die surface finish are all key features that determine the quality of the die being produced.

The S131 Radius seamlessly integrates advanced mechanical components with intuitive software interfaces, allowing ammunition die manufacturers to optimize internal grinding processes for flawless production.  Check out this video for more.
