Manufacturing Coalition formed
The U.S. economy is showing positive signs towards a true recovery. The stock market is up, inflation is down, interest rates are down and, finally, manufacturing is up! Still, with all the positive news, more than two million manufacturing jobs have been lost in the past 36 months, many of which have been shipped overseas. No one knows this better than Joseph K. Smith, publisher of Machining magazine and founder of the Manufacturing Coalition (MC). The MC is a grass roots organization bringing together businesses, professional associations, and concerned individuals to protect and promote the American manufacturing base. Developed through a series of conversations between Joe Smith, various political figures, and key executives in the metalworking industry, the MC was born. "We advocate telling our congressional and executive branches of government to remove costly job-destroying burdens and anti-growth policies,” says Smith. “Issues such as providing investment and tax incentives to spur capital investment, as well as accelerated depreciation,” added Smith. “We’re not promoting protectionism, but working to restore America’s manufacturing base. We’re talking about making our country more competitive, providing higher productivity, and being on the cutting edge of manufacturing technology. If we accomplish this agenda, we will gain World Market Share,” offers Smith. “In order for us to be successful, we must all become advocates, helping to spread the word about the plight of American manufacturing. The first step in rebuilding our manufacturing base is communicating our message to those in a position to make a difference. The good news is that companies, both large and small, are joining with us, and trade associations in the manufacturing sector have agreed to be advocates,” Smith continued. Over the past year this has been Smith’s message as he has toured the country making speeches and visiting with key political figures. His goal is to create one strong, loud voice, with the power to influence positive change in tax and trade laws affecting America’s manufacturing industry.
