Walter Grinders is the "tool grinding section" of the United Grinding team - the North American arm of WALTER MASCHINENBAU and EWAG.  Most of our 90 employees work at our factory in Fredericksburg, VA, but we also have demo centers near Detroit and Los Angeles, plus two employees in Mexico.      

What we do

WALTER and EWAG offer the most technically advanced and successful tool grinders in the world, and we sell and service them for the North American market.  We also assemble WALTER Helitronic tool grinders at our plant in Fredericksburg, VA.  The WALTER line also includes saw grinders (the Woodtronic) and measuring machines (Helicheck and Heli Toolcheck).

By the way: A tool grinder makes cutting tools like drills and router bits from carbide, PCD (synthetic diamond), and HSS (high speed steel).  Those tools are used in other machines to cut parts made out of a wide variety of materials.  These parts could be finished items you're familiar with, like a car's engine block, or a part of a larger item you use. 

Our customers include companies that make cutting tools for their own use, like the big automtove and aerospace plants, plus companies that specialize in making cutting tools, including surgical tools.  Another group of customers specialize in sharpening cutting tools that have become dull through use.

Our history

WALTER was founded in 1919 as a cutting tool manufacturer.  They began making tool grinders in 1953.  Walter Grinders was founded in 1981 to manufacture WALTER machines in North America.  Walter Grinders grew steadily and became the clear market leader by 1995.  In September, 2004, Schleifring bought the machine division from WALTER.  In January, 2005, Schleifring/United Grinding moved EWAG's North American operation from the Ohio office to Walter Grinders in Virginia.
